In the budget speech, the Finance Minister announced that drugs used in the treatment of serious diseases and opening cancer day care centers in every district of the country. Apart from this, in the 77 -minute speech, he did not make any major announcement related to health. He also used the word healthcare only 2 times.

348 deaths every hour due to lack of doctors, medicines and treatment on time

  • According to the Civil Registration System of the Government of India, a total of 1.57 crore people died in 2019 and 2020.
  • Of these, 39% i.e. about 61 lakh people died due to lack of medical facility on time.
  • However, 2020 was the year of Kovid. Therefore, in 2019, 26.36 lakh people died due to lack of medical facility, while in 2020 the figure was 36.52 lakhs.
  • This means that 348 people in India are suffering from time to time due to lack of doctors, medicines and treatment.

China, Bhutan ahead in spending on the treatment of common man

  • The biggest measure of knowing how the health system of any country is is how much people spend the treatment and how much government raises.
  • When we get treatment, the whole expenses do not go through our pocket. The government gives subsidy on doctor’s fees, examinations and medicines.
  • After this, the part that goes from our pocket is called ‘out of pocket experience’.
  • According to the World Bank, people in India spend 50% on treatment from their pockets.

3 times in 10 years of UPA, NDA increased by 2.5 times the budget

  • In 2004, the Government of India’s Health Budget was Rs 9,200 crore and in 2013 Rs 27,147 crore.
  • That is, the health budget increased on average 295% in the ten years of the UPA government.
  • The average health budget increased by 258% every year between 11 years of Modi government i.e. 2014 and 2024.
  • In this way, the NDA government is spending less on the health budget than the UPA government.

This time there is no major announcement related to health; While both announcements of 2024 ineffective

Last year i.e. in the budget of 2024, there were 2 major health announcements-

1. Custom duty on 3 cancer drugs zero

  • Custom duty on these 3 medicines of cancer was zero-
  1. Trastuzumab deruxtecan
  2. Osimertinib
  3. Durvalumab
  • The highest cost of cancer treatment costs chemotherapy, doctor and hospital fees. At the same time, 25% is spent on medicines.
  • Dr. Mansi Khanderia, a cancer specialist from Bengaluru, says, “Reducing the custom duty of these three medicines did not provide much relief in treatment expenses.”

2. New Medical College and Hospitals will be built

  • The government announced to start a new medical college and hospital, but did not state their number.
  • In October 2024, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of three new medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh, which are still being built.
  • The government has so far approved 16 new AIIMS construction. None of these construction has been completed.
